Meet, Mieka, an Acute Nurse at Fresenius Medical Care, whose career began in 2006, as a medical-surgical nurse caring for patients with kidney disease. Interactions with dialysis nurses sparked her interest in nephrology, and she soon found herself captivated by the immediate impact dialysis could have on patients in need. Reflecting on her early curiosity, Mieka shares that as a young girl, she was “always interested in taking care of people,” and those early conversations with dialysis nurses opened her eyes to the unique results of dialysis. “I loved seeing the immediate results,” she says, “like when a patient’s breathing improves after treat.

Embracing the Challenges of Acute Nursing

In her role, Mieka’s days are marked by flexibility and resilience. Acute nursing demands adaptability due to ever-changing schedules and the frequent need for emergent treatments. Despite these challenges, Mieka finds fulfillment in her work, explaining that “a typical day requires being flexible, especially when emergent orders come in.” She acknowledges that while the unpredictability can be difficult, she’s motivated by the knowledge that her efforts make a real difference in her patients’ lives. 

Mieka appreciates the autonomy her role offers, as it allows her to make impactful decisions and care for patients in real-time. She finds it rewarding to work independently, feeling “respected and valued by the nephrologist and the entire team” for her assessments and dedication.

Dedication to Quality Care

Recognized for her compassionate approach, Mieka was recently awarded the CARE Award for her dedication to patient care and support for colleagues. Reflecting on this honor, she says, “I was excited and honored to receive the CARE Award. I think I was nominated because I truly care about my patients’ well-being,” adding that she also strives to be a resource for her co-workers, especially new team members. 

Known for treating each patient as though they were family, Mieka’s approach aligns closely with Fresenius Medical Care’s mission. She notes that she “follows all policies and treats all patients like family,” explaining that her natural empathy helps her provide the highest quality of care possible.

Looking to the Future

Mieka is optimistic about the future of dialysis care at Fresenius Medical Care, where she believes the commitment to evidence-based practices will continue to improve patient outcomes. Her advice to those entering the healthcare field or considering a career in management at Fresenius Medical Care is to embrace lifelong learning and adaptability. “Healthcare is always changing,” she explains, urging others to “never get too comfortable—there’s always something new to discover.”
