Career Tips from the Recruiters at FMCNA
Whether you’re just starting off your career, making the transition from a different field or looking to take the next step in your career path, insights from a recruiter can help you put your best foot forward. Our recruiters are sharing answers to your frequently asked career questions.
What do recruiters look for in a resume?
Ultimately, when looking for resumes, a recruiter will look for experience that reflects the requirements of the job description. Make sure to highlight any pertinent information you have that relates directly to the job description throughout your resume.
What should I include in my cover letter?
A cover letter always goes the extra mile in explaining why you're interested in the role, why your skill set is a fit for the role, why you're looking to make a move, etc. Be sure to infuse your personality in the cover letter by telling your authentic story.
I’m looking to transition into a new field – any advice?
While you may not have direct experience relevant to a role, be sure to check whether experience is required or if it is just preferred. Moreover, try to highlight any experience you have within any related fields. For example, if you’re seeking to transition into dialysis, try to highlight any experience you have in medical surgical and ICU fields or any familiarity you have with emergency operational procedures. In addition, provide a cover letter explaining your desire to transition into a new field, and again, use this in order to highlight your applicable experience.
As a recent graduate, do you have any recommendations on how I can gain experience?
The best way to gain experience is either through an internship or entry-level position. Be sure to include a profile section in the top portion of your resume that includes your career objective, your related college coursework, and the type of role(s) you are interested in. Make sure to tailor your resume to highlight your skills that match the skills detailed in the job description for the job to which you are applying.
So, what’s the interview process like?
During interviews, we look for candidates who are able to articulate their skills and expertise and connect them with the job they're interviewing for. Also, don't let us do all the interviewing! Successful candidates are often those who ask questions and want to know more about the jobs, company culture or work environment. While it's easier said than done, try to show your personality and be yourself.
