Providing Care, Compassion and Empathy, Every Day

Our clinic nurses are at the heart of the care we deliver each day, providing vital support to those undergoing dialysis treatment in Fresenius Medical Care clinics around the world. Meet Erica, a clinic nurse at Fresenius Medical Care since February 2022 and whose dedication shines through the care she provides her patients every day.

A Day in the Life: Erica

Home Therapies, RN CAP 4

Every day, I remind myself that these patients are someone’s loved one, and I care for them as I would for my own family.

Home Therapies RN, CAP 4

  • A Journey to Dialysis Care

With nearly 20 years of nursing experience, 16 of which have been dedicated to dialysis, Erica always knew that healthcare was her calling. However, it wasn’t until she explored dialysis care, encouraged by friends who were thriving in the field, that she found her true passion. “I realized early on in my career that hospital work wasn’t for me,” she says. “I was drawn to dialysis because it allows me to care for patients on a deeper level, getting to know them personally and helping them improve their quality of life.”

Her journey has taken her through various roles, from charge nurse to clinic manager and clinical educator. She even had the chance to train other nurses in hemodialysis during trips to Africa and the Philippines. But it’s her current role as a Clinic Nurse that brings her the greatest fulfillment.

  • The Heart of a Clinic Nurse

A typical day as a Clinic Nurse involves much more than just following routines. Erica describes the experience as dynamic and ever-changing. “No two days are the same,” she says. “We work in a busy clinic, so you have to be able to pivot from what’s planned and go with the flow.”

The close relationships she builds with her patients are the core of what she loves about her job. “Understanding our patients allows me to adjust how I teach or approach conversations with them. It builds trust and helps me provide the best possible care.”

  • Overcoming Challenges with Compassion

One of the biggest challenges in her role is ensuring patients stay on track with their treatments. “Sometimes, patients don’t follow their prescribed care plans, and it can be difficult when they don’t answer calls or continue to struggle with compliance,” she explains. But her philosophy is one of persistence and empathy. “The key is to never give up—keep educating them, be kind, and involve the whole care team.”

  • A Mission that Aligns with Personal Values

For Erica, Fresenius Medical Care’s mission to improve the quality of life for every patient resonates deeply. “Every day, I remind myself that these patients are someone’s loved one, and I care for them as I would for my own family.”

    Advice for Aspiring Nurses

Erica’s advice for those considering a career in healthcare, especially in dialysis, is simple: “Do your research and ask lots of questions. This job is far from easy, but if you have a heart for it, you’ll find it’s the most fulfilling work you can do.”
