Nicole’s Journey from PCT to Registered Nurse at Fresenius Medical Care

Nicole is a vital part of Fresenius Medical Care, making significant contributions as a nephrology nurse. Her journey began in 2017 when she applied to become a Patient Care Technician (PCT) while still in nursing school. Inspired by her mother, who had started working with Fresenius Medical Care a few years earlier, Nicole found a perfect fit for her aspirations in the dialysis center.

Teamwork in Dialysis

One of Nicole's favorite aspects of being a nephrology nurse is the emphasis on teamwork. "Dialysis is all about teamwork," she says. "I enjoy working with an interdisciplinary team to help patients succeed. Watching the patients grow through their dialysis journey is one of the most enjoyable parts of my job."

Building Relationships with Patients

Nicole believes that the most important part of being a nurse is the relationship she builds with her patients. "For some of them, they see the dialysis staff so often, we become a little family. As a dialysis family, we celebrate their successes and learn together during the teachable moments," she shares. These ongoing relationships add immense value to her work and create a supportive environment for the patients.

Memorable Moments and Patient Resilience

Reflecting on her seven years in dialysis, Nicole recalls many memorable moments and stories. One story that stands out is from her first day on the job. "I remember a patient proudly stating that he was the oldest person in the room. He was correct, and he never let his age or illness put a damper on his spirits," she recalls. Nicole is constantly amazed by the positivity and resilience of her patients, even when starting dialysis can be a daunting experience.

From PCT to Registered Nurse

Nicole's career path is a testament to her dedication and hard work. Starting as a PCT allowed her to practice outside the classroom, and the nurses at the dialysis center became her coworkers and teachers. "They supported me, gave me tips on how to succeed, and were my biggest cheerleaders," she says.

Now, Nicole is an RN [Registered Nurse] CAP 2 and has precepted many nurses who have joined her center. She values her roots as a PCT and believes that the experience she gained in that position makes her a better nurse. "PCTs are the unsung heroes of dialysis, and I am grateful for everything they do for our patients," she emphasizes.

A Journey of Growth and Learning

Nicole's journey from a PCT to a registered nurse is an inspiring story of growth, learning, and dedication. Her experiences at Fresenius Medical Care have shaped her into the compassionate and skilled nurse she is today.
